The book of Judges recounts the early history of Israel in the promised land at a time when "there was no King in Israel and everyone did what was right in his own eyes." The Israelites forget about God when times were good, neglect His commandments, and are enticed by foreign gods. As a result, the Lord delivers them into the hands of their enemies where eventually they cry out to Him. God, in His mercy, raises up "judges" who deliver His people, but they soon forget God and repeat the cycle. This downward cycle has been a common pattern for many through the ages -- when we are "captains of our own ship," we will inevitably run our lives aground. On the other hand, the book of Judges recounts unique individuals who trusted God (some of whom are listed in the Hebrews 11) and are examples of what walking by faith looks like. Through faith in Jesus and following Him, we can break the downward cycle and mimic the heroes of old.
